Retail Disc check can be removed by copying remaining files manually and editing the config files to point to the installation folder.[citation needed]
GOG.com Also includes Master of Orion. Pre-packaged with DOSBox.[4]
Humble Store Packaged with Master of Orion.

Version differences[edit]

Later updates of the game included a Windows 95 version of the executable, called Orion95.exe. This version was highly unoptimized though, particularly laggy when playing multiplayer games. Many don't consider this a true Windows version because of this.

Essential improvements[edit]

Run in DOSBox[edit]

To improve DOSBox performance make the following changes to the DOSBox configuration file:

  • Change core=auto to core=dynamic
  • Change cycles=auto to cycles=max

Patches[edit]

The latest official patch is version 1.31, which can be found here. There is also an unofficial 1.50.18.2 patch (as of Nov 22, 2020) here (includes a windows-based launcher and optional mods). An older fan patch, 1.40, can be found here in-case 1.50 has something you don't like. Also note that the digital versions have 1.40 pre-installed, info for reverting which back to 1.31 can be found here. Additional patches/mods (possibly obsolete) can be found here, here, here and here.

A reversed engineered source port is available.

Issues fixed[edit]

'The program can't start because DPLAY.dll is missing' error (Windows 95 version)[edit]

Even with the fix, the mouse cursor in-game will not render properly
Add dplay.dll to the installation folder and set up compatibility settings[citation needed]
  1. Go to %WINDIR%SysWOW64
  2. Copy dplayx.dll and paste it into the game installation folder.
  3. Rename the copied file to dplay.dll
  4. Right click on the ORION95.EXE file and select 'Properties'.
  5. Go to the 'Compatibility' tab and enable Compatibility Mode (set it to 'Windows 98 / Windows ME'). Also check 256-color and 640x480 resolution.
  6. Run the ORION95.EXE file to play the game.

Version differences[edit]

The pre-alpha/software pitch version of the game was actually known as Star Lords. It has some slightly different graphics and some races have slightly different names.

Essential improvements[edit]

Run in DOSBox[edit]

To improve DOSBox performance make the following changes to the DOSBox configuration file:

  • Change core=auto to core=dynamic
  • Change cycles=auto to cycles=max

Patches[edit]

The latest official patch is version 1.3, which can be found here. Note that the digital releases are fully updated, thus the update file is unnecessary on said version. An unofficial 1.4m is also available for download here. The original thread where it was discussed and created (download link dead) can be found here. There is also a 1.4n patch here, which is slightly newer than 1.4m. Note that 1.4n requires 1.4m to be installed first.
In addition to the above there is a fix that adds Gravis UltraSound support available here. For more info on getting GUS working, see DOSBox. A map editor is also available here.

1oom[edit]

1oom is a GPLv2 game engine recreation that runs on Unix (Linux), Windows and DOS. It requires the LBX files from MOO1.
Does not require DOSBox. Extra features include larger galaxy view resolution, mouse wheel support, planetary governor for less micro, space combat autoresolve for skipping boring battles, hotseat multiplayer, and quality-of-life streamlining.[5]
Installing 1oom
  1. Download the latest Binaries.
  2. Extract the archive to another folder.
  3. Copy your MOO1 LBX files to the folder where 1oom was extracted.
  4. For Windows, Run either 1oom_classic_sdl1.exe (For Older Computers) or 1oom_classic_sdl2.exe (Recommended. For Newer Computers. )
